The following questions will be the
focus of our Seminar:
• What is the biggest issue facing
American society today? Why?
• Can social justice be achieved under
the present system of government?
• Is human nature fundamentally good or
bad?
• Can legislation change human
behavior?
• Should we seek gradual or immediate
changes to society?
• Can society be improved by active
involvement or by withdrawal?
• What makes the good society?
Which Reform Movement was the most
important and necessary for the 19th century?
In order for american society to reform itself, we must have a fortified foundation from which the people can remove their rose-colored glasses and recognize the social issues of the time. Consequently, the very first achievement reformers accomplished is education. whether attending school or becoming an autodidact (like Benjamin Franklin or da Vinci), these individuals strived to attain knowledge.

But before we can focus on eduction we need to free the children from child labor and then educational movement can be focus, we must first strengthen the labor union and make a change today for the future stake of the children because they can work at the age of 12 is still not good enough
ReplyDeleteBefore enhancing the education system and the rights for child labor we need to view the inhuman conditions that mental "home" and prisons would put sometimes innocent people through. The government would not care about these individuals because they were born unusual (with some type of deformity or illness) in which these individuals would end up being mistreated and tortured.
ReplyDeleteThe transcendentalism movement and education reform were clearly the two greatest social issues that challenged Antebellum America. THANKS to this movement, we have been able to think with an open and free mind. The education reform, the mother of all reforms, not only enhanced the current education system and exposed it to those not being educated, but it also provided the tools to engender effective social change.
ReplyDeletebut before the children can be educated they must be set free from child labor then they have a choose to go to school and get educated, what is the point of having an opened mind if you are force to work at a young age in condition that are unhealthy and dangerous
ReplyDeleteBy having an open mind one knows of what is taking place and one is aware what they can achieve even if they are trapped in a sense.
DeleteBut they are more focus on getting money back to their family because most of the children there use to be part of a farming family but move to the city and they are told to do their part and bring money, if we get rid of child labor then they can go and get eduaction if not they are stuck in the concept of working
ReplyDeleteThe Second Great Awakening is what helped society to realize why change must be bought upon to the different institutions. With religion a different perspective of morality introduced where the definitions of right and wrong changed. These ideas of morality influenced a change in government in which different groups sought to change. The Second Great Awakening was simply GREAT because many reformist where driven by religion to change something seen as unjust in their eyes.
ReplyDeleteThe temperance movement was not only about alcohol, but the prevention of the effects alcohol consumption had on the daily lives of others. How can a women fight for her rights if she is afraid of her own drunk husband? How can children gain their education if they're busy drinking and working?
ReplyDeleteAlthough all of the cases are important, in the prison and asylum reform, the issue is that it is being overlooked by mostly everyone. This issue keeps being pushed back and the issue is in great need to be fixed because it would affect the future of the United States. The living conditions were not only horrid, but the funding was coming from the citizens, Is it not logical that these conditions at least live up to what the people are paying. Also, the Constitution promises rights of life and liberty, yet some are being incarcerated for merely spitting on the street. At the same time, mentally ill patients are merely being sent away into hiding instead of being helped.
